Internal Family Systems (IFS) at Living Free

What is Internal Family Systems (IFS)?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a therapy model that helps people understand and heal their inner world. It is based on the idea that the mind is made up of different “parts” — each with its own feelings, roles, and perspectives.

For trauma survivors, some parts may carry pain from the past, others may try to protect by avoiding feelings, while others may push for achievement or control. Often, these parts conflict, leaving people feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected from themselves.

IFS helps clients develop a relationship with these inner parts, guided by what is called the “Self” — the calm, compassionate, centered part of us that can lead healing.

At Living Free, IFS is used to help clients reduce inner conflict, release burdens of trauma, and reconnect with a sense of wholeness.

How It Works

Mapping out “parts” of the inner system (protectors, exiles, managers).

Building curiosity and compassion toward each part.

Unburdening traumatic memories carried by parts.

Strengthening Self-leadership — the calm and compassionate inner core.

Evidence Base

IFS is a trauma-informed therapy model supported by growing clinical research. It is particularly effective in treating complex trauma and dissociation, and is aligned with DSM-5’s understanding of trauma and stress-related disorders.

Healing can begin by listening to all parts of yourself.
